The air inside The Foundry on Friday night crackled with an almost spiritual energy as Chevy Metal took the stage. More than just a cover band, this outfit, featuring the formidable talents of Wiley Hodgden on bass and vocals, Brent Woods on searing lead guitar, and the astounding Shane Hawkins on drums, delivered a masterclass in classic rock reverence and raw power.
From the moment they launched into their set, it was clear this was no ordinary tribute. Hodgden's soulful vocals and rock-solid bass laid down the groove, while Woods' guitar work was a blistering homage to the greats. But all eyes and ears were frequently drawn to the back of the stage, where Shane Hawkins, stepping into the colossal shoes of his late father, Taylor Hawkins, commanded the kit with a presence far beyond his years.
The true highlight arrived with their thunderous rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick." What followed was not just a drum solo, but a clinic. Shane unleashed a torrent of rhythmic precision and explosive fills, each beat resonating with a deep understanding of the song's legacy while injecting his own youthful, undeniable flair. It was a breathtaking display of percussive artistry, earning a roaring, standing ovation that seemed to shake the very foundations of the venue.
Later, the band paid a poignant tribute during their gritty cover of Black Sabbath’s "The Wizard." Hodgden prefaced the track with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the recent passing of the legendary Ozzy Osbourne. It was a moment of collective remembrance, solidified by the band's faithful yet impassioned delivery. Shane's drumming throughout was a testament to his burgeoning mastery, proving he's not just carrying a torch, but lighting his own path with remarkable command and maturity. Chevy Metal didn't just play songs; they celebrated a legacy, and in Shane Hawkins, the future of rock drumming looks incredibly bright.
