On a humid Wednesday night in Philadelphia, Australian rock revivalists Jet stormed the stage of The Fillmore, delivering a set that was less a nostalgia trip and more a resounding affirmation of their enduring power. Far from resting on the laurels of their early 2000s breakout, Nic Cester and company proved that the raw energy and infectious hooks that made them a household name are still burning bright, perhaps even brighter than ever.
The Fishtown venue, steeped in its own industrial history and vibrant atmosphere, was the perfect venue for Jet's brand of swaggering, blues-infused rock. From the moment the house lights dropped and the opening riff of "Last Chance" sliced through the air, the crowd was in their collective palm. Nic Cester, a commanding presence from the jump, stalked the stage, his voice as gritty and soulful as ever, while Peter Marin (filling in for Chris Cester) held down the rhythm section with a relentless, pounding precision.
While fan favorites from their seminal debut, Get Born, were met with riotous cheers – "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" remains an undeniable singalong anthem, and "Cold Hard Bitch" hit with the force of a freight train, but it was the seamless integration of newer material that truly showcased the band's evolution. Tracks like "Hurry Hurry," one of their recent singles, seamlessly blended into the setlist, proving that Jet isn't just looking back, but forging ahead. There was a palpable sense of renewed vigor, a band genuinely enjoying the act of making noise together.
The night wasn't without its moments of raw, unadulterated rock and roll grit. Mark Wilson's bass lines rumbled deep in your chest, anchoring the band's sometimes frenetic energy, while Cameron Muncey’s guitar work was a masterclass in tasteful, no-frills rock, delivering searing solos and chunky riffs. The band's cover of AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" was a joyous, sweat-soaked homage, a reminder of their roots and influences, and a testament to their ability to inhabit the spirit of rock legends without ever sounding like a mere imitation.
By the time the final chords rang out, leaving ringing ears and satisfied smiles in their wake, it was clear: Jet’s flame hasn’t dwindled. If anything, the years have only seasoned their sound, adding depth and a harder edge to their already formidable arsenal. This wasn't just a band playing their hits; this was a band reminding us why those hits resonated so deeply in the first place, and why they’re still a force to be reckoned with in the ever-evolving landscape of rock and roll. The Fillmore witnessed a band reborn, and Philadelphia was all the better for it.
